plantar fasciitis is Very common: More than 3 million US cases per year

An inflammation of a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes.

The inflamed tissue runs across the bottom of the foot. Symptoms include stabbing pain near the heel. Pain might be worst in the morning. Treatments include physical therapy, shoe inserts, steroid injections, and surgery.

In the beginning we see inflammation of the plantar fascia, which then over time leads to it becoming fibrotic and adhered.

Dr. Hetland’s top 3 TREATMENTS FOR PLANTAR FASCIITIS

When Self-care doesn’t… then what do I do? Dr. Hetland goes over the top 3 treatments he performs in the office to help promote blood flow + break up adhesions. Cases of plantar fasciitis heel pain often resolve in 1-3 visits with Dr. Hetland’s treatment, even when they have been chronic.

  • Active Release Technique (ART)… helps tissue become more pliable and helps foot absorb shock!
  • Cold Laser… Help promote blood flow + improve healing so the tissue can become more pliable.
  • Chiropractic Adjustment…to either the foot or ankle as well as the L4, L5, S1 areas in the lower back as they are the neurological source for function for all the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the lower leg and foot.

TOP 3 REASONS TO GET X-RAYS FOR PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Imaging like an x-ray is rarely required, however how do you know when you need an x-ray? Dr. Hetland goes over the top 3 reasons which may happen right away with a proper examination by a doctor or after you have exhausted the above self-care and doctor treatments.

  • Bone Spur… You won’t know you have developed a bone spur in your heel without an x-ray. This can be a reason your heel pain has not been getting better.
  • Anatomical… You could have an anatomical fusion or calcification of tissue from past trauma and you wouldn’t know this unless you take an x-ray to visualize the area.
  • Fracture… You won’t know if you have a stress fracture without an x-ray. Often the pain of a stress fracture can mimic a strain or plantar fasciitis at times, so it is common to try and “tough it out” and let it heal. However, if things are not responding in a normal time with the proper treatments, it may be time to get an x-ray.
